Trash Service Rules & Regulations

5/18/2022

It has been brought to our attention that there are a number of citizens that have chosen not to adhere to the rules and regulations that come with having trash service in Portageville. We would like to remind you of a few key items that must be followed. For more information on our Solid Waste Service or to read the full list of prohibited items, please click this link ( Solid Waste Department ) to be directed to the Portageville Municipal Code Book.

  • The requirements for a solid waste container should be a watertight, galvanized metal or a durable plastic container equipped with a handle or handles to facilitate lifting, and a tight-fitting lid of a capacity of 30 gallons or less, which, when containing solid waste, shall not weigh in excess of 75 pounds. All trash within the containers must be placed in bags.
  • Containers shall be placed at the curb for pickup not before 5:00 P.M. on the day before pickup and the empty container should be picked-up and replaced at the residence behind a fence within 24 hours after being emptied.
  • There is a list of items prohibited from being put in the regular garbage container. That list can be found in Section 230.130 of the Municipal Code by clicking the link above. There is a pickup service for non-residential trash items and a sticker must be purchased at City Hall to utilize this service.
  • Penalties and fines can be invoked for Solid Waste Violations. Any person violating any of the provisions of this Chapter, or any lawful rules or regulations promulgated pursuant thereto, upon conviction shall be punished by a fine as set out in Section 100.220 of this code book.

If your trash is not picked up by our Solid Waste team due to a violation or because you failed to sit it out the night before, the Solid Waste team will no longer return to your property to pick it up. It will remain at your property until the next scheduled pickup. We thank you for your cooperation with this matter. If you have any questions or would like to obtain a copy of the referenced section of the Municipal Code, please contact City Hall at 573-379-5789 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
